Using iWitness for vehicle crush modeling

This smashed vehicle is a 1994 Toyota pick-up truck.  iWitness close-range photogrammetry is an excellent tool for quickly and accurately 3D modeling vehicle crush and for aiding in measurement and computation of Equivalent Barrier Speed.

In this example, iWitness modeled the crush profile of the smashed vehicle as well as an exemplar vehicle. Both of the 3D modeled vehicles were then easily merged in CAD. Measurement results were accurate to +/- one-tenth of an inch. The photography time was less than 5 minutes, the iWitness 3D model work was less than one hour on a PC, and the completed CAD diagram merged the two iWitness data sets in about 5 minutes, for a total of about one hour to accurately map this project.

STEP 1: Use your digital camera to acquire three or more different angle images for the iWitness 3D mapping process.

Green marks are applied in iWitness by using the computer's mouse. The ones in the blue circles indicate the "index points" which will be used to index the crushed vehicle to the gray exemplar vehicle below.

Step 2: With iWitness, map the same exemplar make and model vehicle to accurately compare the crush deformation.

The example below illustrates the markings on the exemplar front bumper that will be compared to similar markings on the crush vehicle.

Step 3: Export Results to CAD

In the diagram below, the Green exemplar bumper profile was accurately created from the iWitness photogrammetry data points. The Red Crush profile points and lines were created from the iWitness photogrammetry data points as well. The iWitness 3D data was exported to the CAD Zone Crash Zone diagramming software. A truck wireframe (blue) is shown for example purposes.
